AIM

It is imperative to understand the many factors that affect skill acquisition so athletes can improve their performance. Based on my performance in lawn bowls this term, I will be deciding and evaluating whether my abilities match those of a cognitive learner. I will be describing my current stage of skill learning and discussing what types of practice would allow for future improvements.

METHOD

Motor learning is the brain’s ability to control the musculoskeletal system in order to produce coordinated movement. It is a change in the capability of a person to perform a skill as a result of practice or experience (Amezdroz, 2010). Partaking in lawn bowls throughout the course has indicated that I need to focus on the some key aspects of motor learning. These aspects include an understanding of the stages of skill acquisition, use of the information processing model and appropriate use of practice types. These aspects will be evaluated and discussed to determine whether I am at the cognitive or associative stage of learning.
